Hubbard Environmental & Land Preservation
Trans Rail America and Evanel Consultants are currently seeking to develop a 243-acre site on Mount Everett Rd. in Hubbard Township to accept construction and demolition debris. At the present time logging has occurred and test borings have been performed. Attorneys for the proposed landfill have also been actively reviewing past zoning history in preparation for future requests on zoning changes for the existing site. Now that the physical site is completed the permit process has started. This venture, if left unrestricted, will result in the acceptance of between 300 and 500 rail cars per day of East Coast trash and increased truck traffic into the area.
As residents of Trumbull and Mahoning County we are aware of the problems that are occurring at this very moment from the proliferation of landfills. This increase in the number of landfills is taking place because of low-cost tipping fees in Ohio. As a result, we can be assured that many unfavorable changes will affect our daily standards of living. In our sister communities, there is a documented evidence of Sub-standard air and water quality along with a stagnant or reduced property values. As we ponder the effects of this landfill in our community , we likely anticipate these problems will only thwart this community's efforts to maintain high standards in just a few of the following areas:
Poor air quality - we now monitor for toxic Hydrogen-Sulfide gases at existing landfills
Poor water quality - as users of the Little Yankee Run and Shenango area watersheds it is not unreasonable to anticipate a lower standard of water quality
Decreased property values - people in Warren Hills Landfill are have already been forced from their homes
Loss of proposed new housing development slated for this area
Increased personal delays due to large increases in train and truck traffic
In an effort to impede the startup of this venture and monitor future land and environment issues, we have formed a group from local residents called HELP, namely, Hubbard Environmental & Land Preservation. We are working closely with Senator Marc Dann in the hopes of gaining every professional and political advantage possible. We are have incorporated as a non-profit organization with tax-exempt status. Our purpose in forming this group is two fold. First, we want to educate the public on all aspects of the urgency of this matter and second, we seek to hire professional experts who can best assess the environmental, personal and economic impact of the proposed landfill and our community. We may at some future time, also require legal and geological representation.
Our group is very dedicated in its mission to stop the landfill. Our plans are ambitious but also very expensive; to get professional help requires real dollars. As a small group, we cannot do this alone. WE NEED YOUR HELP, both financially and physically. We plan to sponsor fundraisers but these alone won't be enough to cover the anticipated costs. We have set a target donation amount of $50.00 per family in hopes of raising the necessary funds but any donation is welcome. We have established an escrow account at the Seven Seventeen Credit Union for your donations.
As a concerned citizens group, we urge all of you to stand with us for the sake of this community. If you think that this won't affect you, you had better think again. This area has many problems relating to economics, but the sad truth is that this venture, left unchecked, will greatly compromise our community. Now is the time for all of us to unite. If you sincerely care about the integrity of this community, please get involved in some way. In addition to helping financially, please consider helping our group in some way.
In the words of Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
Sincerely,
Hubbard Environmental & Land Preservation
